Country French Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • 1 ½ cups Warm Water no more than 118 degrees F
  • 3 ½ - 4 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 pkg Active Yeast (or 2 1/4 tsp)
  • 2 ½ tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Sour Cream
  • 2 tsp Table Salt
  • Corn Meal for sprinkling

Instructions
 

  • Mix Water and Sugar together in a large mixing bowl.
  • Sprinkle yeast on top and let set for about 10 minutes or until it appears foamy.
  • Mix in 3 Cups of flour, sour cream and table salt
  • Knead in the remaining flour, 1/4 a cup at a time, either by hand or by hook, whichever you are using.
  • Place dough ball in a well greased bowl. Turn to coat.
  • Cover and let rise at room temperature until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  • Punch dough down and shape into 2 sticks
  • Let your sticks rise a second time on a baking sheet lightly sprinkled with cornmeal until doubled in volume again
  • "Slash" loaves with a serrated or very sharp knife
  • Place in oven preheated to 450f for 20-25 minutes.
